Isla went pee-potty today! We’ve been casually trying since we got back from vacation. She didn’t mind sitting on the potty with her pants on, but as soon as we took her diaper off and sat her on it, she’d start bawling. This morning she woke up with a dry diaper so we put her on there (crying) and turned the faucet on. And she did it!

Isla is growing up fast! At least as far as all the things she’s doing and saying. She’s still at about the 10th percentile on her height and weight -- she’s a little girl -- but her brother is on the small side too (I guess we just make small babies).
She’s moved on from just mimicking what people say to actually using words appropriately -- though it’s still baby talk. She asks for a "dink" (drink), can say "eat", of course names like "mommy", "da da", and even "Isla". She calls her pacifier her "bee-yow". Does lots of animal noises when you ask her how they "go": kitty-kat ("meeeoooowwww"), horsey ("mm-nn-hh-nn-mmm" as she shakes her head), fishy (puckers her lips and wiggles them up and down), or even to howl at the moon ("oooww-ooooooooooo").
She’s also become fluent in Japanese apparently. At least that’s what it sounds like to us. She’ll jabber on for minutes just making noises that don’t mean anything. Sometimes you can tell that they mean something to her!
She has started to get angry at things though! Yikes! She has a terse, guttural "aaahhh" that she does to express that she doesn’t like something. She’s taken to pushing Kelton away when he gets up in her face. And we’ve seen her get upset at a pair of shoes and she just started wailing on them with her fists!
We just got back from a vacation to the Northwest. We went with Grandma and Grandpa Luhring. Flew into Seattle, drove down the Oregon coast, saw the redwoods in Northern California, headed back up the Oregon Rockies and ended up back in Seattle.
Isla was such a good girl the whole trip! You could tell that her ears bugged her a bit in the airplane, but overall she didn’t mind it. She slept a lot in the van rides and missed out on some of the beautiful sight-seeing pull-offs because of that.
She learned to play "the mommy game" while in the van. "Mommy." "What, baby?" "Mmmmooommmmyyy..." "Yes?" "Mommy." "Yes, baby?" "MOMMY!" Then Jamie would turn around and look at her (which is what she wants), and she’d go into her Japanese, "Ya-bee, jee goo bo da tee key." Then she was done. She had something to say! Ten minutes later the game would start again!
Now we’re back home! We wanted to let her keep her pacifier through the vacation, but this week we cut a hole in the end. ...now, if you recall when we did this with Kelton, that was it, Kelton wanted nothing to do with a pacifier after the tainted hole was introduced... Isla on the other hand acted as if she practically didn’t care that there was a hole in it! She noticed it, of course, but still had it in her mouth. The next day she didn’t want it as much, but still needed it occasionally. We’ve started to make the hole a little bigger everyday now... She’s pretty much to the point of not asking for it except when its time for bed. But even with a big chunk of the tip cut off she still wants it to fall asleep with. I guess we only have a day or two left before the thing won’t be long enough to keep in her mouth!
Just the last couple of days we’ve started the process of potty-training too! Yippy! She’s been pulling at her diaper and telling us when she goes, so it is time! Jamie sat her on the potty for the first time and she acted scared! But she’ll get the hang of it. We’re counting down the days to not having to buy diapers!

Isla is still expanding her vocabulary. She’ll watch your lips pretty intently and try to mimic just about anything. She’s just picked up on "oh-wee, baby". Very funny! She can also count to three which she learned for the sole purpose of something fun always happens on "three", like Daddy tossing her in the air, or Mommy spinning her in circles. Her counting sounds like "one...do...eee".
Now that it is spring she’s really enjoying walks around the block! She’s still pretty short for her age, and she has the whole neighborhood laughing when she takes off in a speed-walk! Kelton will take off running (he likes to go fast), then Isla will give out a little girl squeal, she’ll throw her arms back and lean forward and start speed walking. Then she’ll usually start swinging one arm while the other stays stationary in front of her.
She loves the playset in the back yard this year too. Still too little to play on most of it, but we have a baby swing for her. Kelton has already shown her that sometimes it’s more fun to twist the swing and spin in circles than to swing normally.
Out of sheer exposure (it’s Kelton’s favorite cartoon), she has become fond of SpongeBob SquarePants. When that song comes on (the "who lives in a pineapple under the sea?" song) she’ll get a big smile on her face and say "Bob Bob". That’s the only word she knows, but that doesn’t stop her from singing the song with that word "Bob Bob Bob Bob...” We also have a mousepad for our computer that is a big SpongeBob face... we pretty much can’t use it for a mousepad anymore because she’s always carrying it around the house.
She’s learning her animals. How’s a kitty go? "Meee-owwww." How’s a horsey go? Then she shakes her head and makes a neigh sound "mnn-nn-nnn-mnnn". She also likes cows and bears.
She had a lot of fun during Easter. She did a REALLY good job hunting eggs. She knew how it worked, finding eggs and putting them in her basket. She’d carry the basket by putting the handle in the crook of her arm with her hand up in the air -- like she does with her toy purses.

Wow, Isla has grown up so much in the last month! Where to start? Well she’s starting to talk now. More than just the "da da" and "ma ma" words. The cutest is that she’ll say "cheese" for the camera, and after she says it she smiles REAL BIG! During the Super Bowl she was also saying touchdown which sounds more like "tut dwn" and she’ll throw her arms up like the refs do (though she was rooting for the Colts and her team lost this year). She’s doing plenty of others like "ball" and "block" which sounds more like "bok". She’s saying "uh-oh" too when she drops things.
She’s also learned to shake her head for yes and no. And for the most part she uses the one she wants to. She’s also pointing out things like mouth, nose, eyes, and belly. If you say, "Isla, where’s your belly" she’ll lift her shirt up and look at her stomach.
She likes to make "fish lips" now too. It ends up looking more like a kissy face. She puckers her lips up and moves her jaw up and down. She thinks that’s pretty funny.
She’s starting to like to color and scribble also. And half the time you can find her carrying a book around, she just loves flipping pages and having mommy and daddy read to her.
She has learned to climb up on things (yikes). She’s gotten up on the couch on her own, and while she’s waiting for the bathtub to fill up she’ll try to lift that leg up to get in, but she’s still a little too short for that.
She can even unlock mommy’s iPhone on her own. She picks it up, presses the button to turn the screen on, and she even knows how to slide her finger to unlock it. Then she becomes dangerous...the next thing you know the icons are in edit mode where you can easily delete things with just a simple tap...
She’s gotten a couple more teeth too, one of them is a molar. Jamie thinks the molar under that one is starting to show, so it is just a matter of time before she can do some real damage! Although she’s already a bottomless pit. She out-eats Kelton at almost every meal...though that’s not saying too much since Kelton has become a very finicky eater lately.

Isla has learned to whistle! Ha ha!
Jamie heard her first several days ago, but the other day I was playing with her and Kelton and I had a toy that is meant to squirt water in the tub, but I was just squeezing it making air sounds... Isla puckered her lips and started breathing in and out to sound like the toy, and she started whistling.
